If we're taking into consideration the latest footage they found that got made into Blair Witch, then we have a few things to consider. It was left in a place they could find it by people who were staging a murder as a performance. This also explains why no one else who finds the footage gets killed in the same way. Neither Mike nor Josh dies, they drop the footage off where someone can easily find it and leave. Mike is actually just luring her into the basement so Josh can sneak up on her and kill her from behind. Heather is the only one we see killed because she's the only one who is actually killed. Nothing that happens to Heather is reliable because Josh and Mike are completely unreliable. Note that this also reinforces that the characters can come and go from the camp unheard and unseen and do whatever they want without Heather noticing. Of course, why let Heather have access to the map if you're leading her someplace you don't want her to escape from? He's a big fat liar.Īnd since they're lying, Mike's probably lying about not knowing where they're going. Later we find out Mike actually had the map and at some point in the middle of the night threw it in the river for no reason, even though he has absolutely no sense of direction.īut wait. Josh says he gave it back to her and accuses her of being crazy and useless. They initially get lost after Heather gives Josh the map. Coincidentally, they keep hearing weird noises in the woods and finding a bunch of goofy trinkets hanging everywhere.Įarlier, Mike says he has no way of knowing where they're going because he can't read a map and has no sense of direction. Josh and Mike keep disappearing from their camp site without Heather knowing where they're going. Heather and Josh have an acrimonious past which he's heavily sarcastic about.
Josh and Mike kill Josh's ex, Heather, after luring her to the woods and gaslighting her. These days, I like to think that the only spirit involved is the Blair Witch's, and that the only reason Rustin Parr killed kids the way he did back in the day is because that's the way the Witch offed her victims when she was alive - she influenced him so much that he took after her way of killing, but when he died, he stayed dead, leaving old Elly Kedward by herself in the woods, alone and desperate for fresh victims revenge herself upon or use as victims in some kind of ungodly, ghostly sacrifice unhinged from time. For the longest time I just always assumed it was the Blair Witch herself who did the killing, though with Mike getting whacked like Rustin Parr's victims, it's possible that there's either no Blair Witch and that the spirit was just Parr's, or that the spirits of both the Witch and Parr were working in conjunction to kill Josh, Mike and Heather. The ending is obviously supposed to be a spirit of some sort knocking out and killing Mike and Heather. Also, I dunno how much sense any theory like that can make, unless it's an entirely separate group of people fucking with Josh, Mike & Heather, (and not just one of the trio working against the other two by themselves). I can see why someone would argue that there may not be a Blair Witch, but that's kind of besides the whole point of the film. The ending is chilling and unique and I love it for that. For me, personally, I think the film pretty clearly paints a picture of people getting lost in the woods and being terrorized by a person or persons, not any supernatural entity.
The film leaves what happened up to you and leaves all conclusions up to the viewer. I love the ending because it creates a reasonable doubt that it could be a supernatural presence, but it could also be a person/people terrorizing our main characters.
They show almost nothing, they have little interest in explaining exactly what’s happening, and they go to great lengths to make sure that the audience is just as “lost” as the characters. TBWP is special because it puts all the onus of fear on the viewer. Just a flat out misinterpretation of why the original was special, in my opinion, for a bunch of reasons. I think trying to put a fine point on what happened sort of diminishes what the film does so well.
